Trakai Island Castle, Trakai, Lithuania
Founded by the Grand Duke Kęstutis, of Lithuania and completed by his son, Vytautas the Great, this striking 14th century castle is strategically positioned on the largest island in Lake Galvė near Vilnius. Surviving an assault by the Teutonic knights at the Battle of Grunwald, the fortress became the primary residence of the Lithuanian Duchy. The castle was sacked by the Russians in 1655 and left to ruin until restoration efforts began in the latter half of the 19th century, and were completed in 1987. It is now a museum available to the public and is one of the most visited destinations in Lithuania.
Using publicly available photometry data, I produced a point cloud of the Trakai Island Castle via ReCap and pulled it into Revit. Since the data was captured by a drone flyover, many ground level details had to be meticulously pieced together from Google maps street-view panoramas. I recreated all the doors, windows, and courtyard details as BIM families from high resolution photographs and video walkthroughs. Using rudimentary floor plans posted on placards around the property as well as first-person video, I was able to create a rough interior floor plan of the keep to accompany the point cloud-accurate exterior.
